Tuesday 22nd February

This project was my self-negotiated project this project allowed us to either choose a brief we were interested in or make up our own brief.

Within this project I decided to make my own brief I chose to create a 6 page promotional fashion and beauty magazine, which would be sent free through the post.  Also within this I decided to come up with a marketing strategy for the brand, a name, and a logo and also the designed home page for the site.  I decided to create this brief because I felt it would challenge myself to create five different elements and within this have to consider elements, which I have not previously worked with for example photography.  I did find righting this brief quite difficult, as this is something I haven’t previously done. .  Overall I feel I achieved my goal of challenging myself with this brief as I have much work to show for it and have had to keep to my time plan within this brief, thus improving my time keeping and organisational skills.

The first element I created was my name, I found this enjoyable and quite a quick process.  I started by coming up with brand characteristics and words, which reminded me of fashion and beauty from here I decided to use the name ‘Boho’.  I feel happy with this name choice as it is related to style, fashion and beauty and also has a short and sweet ring to it.

The second element I created was the logo, I started this by researching similar magazine logos to find that they were all very generic.  I sketched many initial ideas for my logo and continued to develop them until I came up with my final logo.  My final logo is quite girly and trendy I feel it targets the age range it is meant to and stands would stand out well next to other magazines within the same category.  The colour of my logo is changeable which I think is a good thing as it means the colour can change depending on the photograph on the front page.  The logo is very curvy, this represents the magazines friendly and approachable characteristics, I have also designed the B so that when the magazine is more recognisable the B can be used to represent the full logo.   Overall I am happy with my logo and I feel it does answer the brief.

The next element to create was the magazine.  All together the magazine now has 7 pages, this was because I felt the magazine needed a advert for the full magazine within it.  Overall I am happy with the look of my magazine as I think it answers the brief fully through its clean and simple look with touches of style.  I also feel that within my magazine I have used a mix of styles including typography, photography and illustration, but yet I have kept the styles simple and I feel the design is continuous throughout.  I found the photography particularly difficult while making the magazine, as this is something I have not used before, however I feel that for my first time using a photography camera my shots are ok, but there is room for improvement.  There are elements I would change within my magazine if I had more time, I would re visit the page furniture within the magazine as it only shows on certain pages this was something I didn’t know how to fix.  If I had more time I would also re look at the layout on the front page as I feel there are little changes which I could make to improve this, I would also like to re visit the photography and see if there are any improvements I could make to my photographs, I would also take a wider range of photographs as a few of them look quite similar.  Overall I am happy with my magazine.

Next I created my website home page, within my website I tried to create a similar feeling to the magazine with a clean, simple look which would let the images do the talking and I wanted it to be easy to use.  I feel I have done this by using a clean layout and having lots of images.  My website is easy to use through it’s main navigation on the top and a secondary navigation on the side, I have used a simple sans serif typeface to mimic that used in the magazine.  Overall I am happy with my website I feel it answers the brief and I wouldn’t make any changes to it.

Last I created my marketing strategy, which is to use frames, which I have used within the magazine to hang on public walls with the logo and some more information on.  I feel this is a good idea, as it looks different from other posters because of the frame, this will draw attention and stand out from other advertisements.  If I could change anything about this I would also include the web address as it would not only advertise the magazine but the website as well.

During this project I feel I have gained skills within editorial design and photography, I feel I am more aware of placing text and how to make and article look more interesting through its layout.  I also feel I have improved my organisational skills by learning to keep to my time plan and keep deadlines.

Overall I feel I have answered the brief and am happy with my outcome.
